Virginia's Natural Bridge Park ~ A Naturally Educational Getaway

By Anna Hall, Hickory NC Publisher August 20, 2015

What's better than a getaway that allows the whole family to experience natural beauty, learn about history, get physical activity in the great outdoors, and unplug and relax too? You'll find it all on a visit to the Natural Bridge Park in Virginia!

Located a mere 3 hour drive from Hickory, the Natural Bridge is one of the oldest tourist destinations in the United States. The bridge itself is a geological formation in which Cedar Creek, a small tributary of the James River, carved out a gorge in the mountainous limestone terrain, forming a natural arch 215 feet high with a span of 90 feet. It is the remains of the roof of a cave or tunnel through which the creek once flowed and continues to serve as a functional bridge with US Route 11 running across the top of it.

Once a sacred site of the Native American Monacan tribe, the Natural Bridge was part of 157 acres of land purchased in 1774 by Thomas Jefferson, who described it as the "most sublime of Nature's works." Legend holds that prior to then in 1750, the site was surveyed by a young George Washington. The Natural Bridge has since been designated a National Historic Landmark, a Virginia Historic Landmark, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

A visit to the Natural Bridge Park is educational, active fun while relaxing in the beauty of the great outdoors. A short, easy walk rewards you with a beautiful sight of the majestic rock formation. The trail is well maintained and a shuttle service is provided for those that choose to avoid the 137 steps at the start. Continue past the bridge for an educational visit to the Monacan Living History Exhibit, Saltpeter Cave, the Lost River and Lace Falls. Come back in the evening for the Drama of Creation to see the bridge adorned in colored lights during a retelling of the creation story according to the Book of Genesis. Additional features at the attraction include the caverns, the deepest on the East Coast with three levels of stunning geological features, as well as hiking trails, bicycle rental, and scheduled events such as nature walks, movie nights, Lunch & Learn and live music. The Natural Bridge Park Historic Hotel, with newly renovated rooms, delicious dining options, and friendly staff provides the perfect accommodations while visiting the area.

In addition to all you will find at the park itself, Virginia's Rockbridge County offers many other attractions to explore. Visit the quirky Foamhenge, a full scale replica of the mystical Stonehenge of England, located a mile down the road. Stroll the quaint streets of historic Lexington, home to the final resting places of iconic figures like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson and named to Smithsonian magazine's list of "The 20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2013." Spend a relaxing day floating or paddling the scenic James River with Twin River Outfitter, providing exceptional assistance, quality equipment and friendly, knowledgeable staff for service that stands out above the rest. Enjoy the long range views from the Blue Ridge Parkway and star studded skies above.

As glorious as it was to visit Virginia's Natural Bridge Park and the surrounding area for our last blast of summer break, I can only imagine the beauty that awaits during the peak foliage of autumn. Plan your next trip to this beautiful region for a naturally educational relaxing getaway the whole family will love.

Disclaimer: I was a recent guest of the Natural Bridge of Virginia for three days/two nights during which hotel accommodations and park admission were complimentary. Furthermore, a kayaking day trip was provided by Twin River Outfitters at no charge. All opinions expressed within this article are 100% my own.
