Hickory Day School, the ChildHealth Center P.A., and Footcandle Film Society are pleased to announce a screening of the film SCREENAGERS: GROWING UP IN THE DIGITAL AGE on Wednesday, August 24th, 2016, at 7pm in the Drendel Auditorium at the SALT Block. A brief question-and-answer period will follow the screening. Admission is free and open to the public.
SCREENAGERS explores the impact of screen technology on kids and offers parents proven solutions that work. The film has been a major success across the nation and packs houses with its powerful and timely message. Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston decided to make SCREENAGERS when she found herself constantly struggling with her two kids about screen time. Ruston felt guilty and confused, not knowing what limits were best, especially when using mobile phones and social media, gaming, and monitoring online homework. She turned the camera on her own family and others — revealing stories that depict messy struggles over social media, video games, academics, and internet addiction.
Interwoven into these stories are insights from thought leaders such as Peggy Orenstein, Sherry Turkle, Simon Sinek, as well as leading brain scientists who present evidence on real changes happening in the brain. SCREENAGERS goes far beyond exposing the risks of screen time and reveals multiple approaches on how parents and educators can work with kids to help them achieve a healthy amount of screen time.
Because the issues presented in the 60-minute film are shared by so many families, Hickory Day School, ChildHealth Center P.A., and Footcandle Film Society decided to bring the film to the Hickory area and make it available to the community for free. It’s an important topic that impacts many families and individuals, and it’s the hope of the sponsors that the film will be a tool to help area residents cope with this ever-increasing problem.
