First Day of School Picture Ideas to Capture the Special Moment

By Christel M Hoydic, Macaroni Kid Publisher, Middletown CT August 25, 2016

With the first day of school right around the corner, I am sure you are just as busy as I am trying to get all the details ironed out. In all of the hustle and bustle, don't forget to plan for your priceless first day of school photo!

I wanted to share something I did last year that I just love, and intend to do it again this year. Instead of printing out the words "1st Day of Kindergarten" (or whatever grade your little macaroni might be entering), I had my son write his own sign with his name at the bottom the night before. We took the picture on his way to the car holding his sign proudly.

At the end of last year, we took another picture with a new sign that he created on the last day of school. I used a photo app to create a side-by-side picture and had a great photo to hang up and cherish of all the ways he had grown within the year, including his height, facial features, and penmanship!

A few other ideas to consider:

  • Add a sentence at the bottom stating what your child wants to be when he/she grows up.
  • Pick a category and list your child's favorite, sticking to the same category each year. Ideas include favorite color, song, movie, book, activity, candy, etc.
  • Include your child's stats such as height, weight, age and shoe size.
  • Have your child hold up a print of him/herself of last year's photo.

No matter how you do it, I know your child's first day of school picture will be one you will put in the memory books, hang on the wall, or even post online for all to see!
