Bowling Green Surprised Me and It Will Surprise You Too

By Anna Hall, Macaroni Kid Pubisher, Hickory NC September 1, 2016

When I was offered the opportunity to spend three days with my fellow Macaroni Kid publishers checking out the family fun to be had in Bowling Green, Kentucky, I wasn't sure what to expect. Having never been to the state before, all I knew of it was the annual horse race and fast food fried chicken. With my insatiable wanderlust and limitless curiosity, I eagerly accepted the invitation. Would Bowling Green live up to its slogan of being "geared for fun?"

Our schedule was jam packed: museums, restaurants, sports, live music, a factory tour, a dairy barn, a distillery, a cave, a butterfly habitat, an amusement park, a general store... and that's not all the area has to offer. By the end of my visit, I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of activities available for the whole family; I can't wait to return with my loved ones for a vacation offering enjoyable and memorable experiences for everyone.

What my husband will love most: the National Corvette Museum and GM Corvette Assembly Plant Tour. As a car enthusiast, my husband has always had a passion for the Corvette. Dubbed America's favorite sports car, the Corvette is made only in Bowling Green. Not only can one observe its step-by-step assembly on the plant tour, there are more than 70 Corvettes on exhibit at the museum, as well as the infamous sink hole that opened up beneath the floor in 2014.

What my daughter will love the most: Beech Bend Park & Splash Lagoon. Being the thrill seeker that she is, my 11 year old will love the rides and activities at the amusement park, especially the most twisted wooden roller coaster in seven states, the Kentucky Rumbler. The summer attraction includes a waterpark with four colossal slides among its many attractions.

What I will love visiting again: Lost River Cave and Butterfly Habitat. Offering Kentucky's only Underground Boat Tour, the Lost River Cave is said to be the shortest and deepest underground river in the world. Next time I want to Kayak the Cave before exploring the valley's numerous nature trails and returning to the enclosed Butterfly Habitat to visit the butterflies we had the special opportunity to release.

As varied as the options are for full-throttle fun in Kentucky's third biggest town, one thing is consistent throughout: a genuine Southern hospitality served within a scenic backdrop of small town charm, making Bowling Green "geared for fun" for your next family vacation.
