5 Reasons to Read with Your Child... and They Are Not What You Think

By Shelly Cain, Hickory NC Mom & MacKid Guest Writer January 19, 2017

I know you have probably seen lots of research about reading to your child; much of that research is related to success in school. I have been teaching for 15 years in the public school system and can attest to the huge difference it makes in school success.  We all know reading is important for child development, but today I am going to bring you 5 reasons that have nothing to do with school.

  1. Reading aloud gives your child your undivided attention.  In this fast paced world of smart phones, fast food, and busyness, children are often craving adult attention.  Reading at least one book (hopefully more) a day gives your child a solid chunk of your attention focused solely on them.
  2. Your child needs cuddles and physical contact of reading together.  If your child is anything like mine, showing her/his love is a contact sport.  Sitting in a favorite chair with my daughter in my lap is one of my favorite times of the day.  If I crave those cuddles, I know she does as well.
  3. Reading sparks imagination and creative play.  Young children learn from example.  The more you read with children, the more they know and can use those ideas in their creative play.
  4. Reading at bedtime can create a relaxing routine to aid in sleep. Some of you have probably been blessed with good sleepers.  I have heard of them, but I haven’t experienced one myself.  Reading a book or two before bed helps my daughter wind down for sleep.  The routine is important as well.  If we miss reading one night, it is truly harder to get her to bed.
  5. You can share your childhood with your child (in a sneaky way).  Did you have a favorite book or book series that you read as a child?  Reading with your child is a great way to enjoy that series again.  Talk with your child about why you loved it so much, and you have shared more than just a book!

No matter what the reason (or how busy you are), pick up a good book with your child today.  You won’t regret it!
