Fill Up Your Kids' Love Tanks on National Compliment Day

com·pli·ment:

  • a polite expression of praise or admiration
  • an act or circumstance that implies praise or respect
  • congratulations or praise expressed to someone.

National Compliment Day is celebrated yearly on January 24th, and what a great day to focus on positive and uplifting rhetoric with our kids!

Plan to start the day by filling up their love tanks. Begin with a verbal compliment to your child such as, “I love how your eyes sparkle in the morning!” or “You were so kind to your brother last night!” Send a written compliment in their book bag or lunchbox that says, “You make me smile even when you aren’t with me!” or “I can’t wait for one of your great hugs when you get home!” Even the smallest praise sprinkled on our children can put a pep in their step for the entire day. Words are powerful and can make or break a child’s spirit.

Over breakfast or on the way to school, discuss how your child has felt after receiving a compliment. Teach her that it’s important to help fill up others love tanks during her day. Helping to put smiles on others faces is one of the kindest things she can do. She might want to give a hug to someone that looks sad or let someone know they are wearing an awesome shirt. Sharing toys at school or including a new friend on the school playground are also great ways for her to extend thoughtfulness during her day.

Most importantly, teach your child to compliment himself! Your child should know he is one of the most unique and special individuals in the world. Encourage him to tell you at least three things he admires and loves about himself and agree with him wholeheartedly! The more we encourage our children to love themselves and others, the more that compassion will surround them and extend to others, not just on National Compliment Day but throughout the whole year... and beyond!
