We made these natural pinecone bird feeders at the Wild Bird workshop at the Maiden branch of the Catawba County Library last month and I just had to share. This is a decorative and simple craft for kids of all ages. Make a few to hang from trees outside to give all the birds a real treat this spring. Word of warning: squirrels love these things!
Materials:
- pine cones
- paper plate
- butter knife
- smooth peanut butter
- bird seed
- ribbon or yarn
- scissors
Instructions:
- Cut a long piece of string or yarn or ribbon to use to hang the bird feeder.
- Wrap one end of the yarn around the top of the pine cone near the top (about 2-3 rows down) and tie in a tight knot.
- Make a loop at the top and tie tightly to use to hang the bird feeder.
- Use the butter knife to spread peanut butter all over the pine cone.
- Pour bird seed onto the paper plate and roll the peanut butter covered pinecone in the seed to cover completely.
- You may choose to freeze the bird feeder for a few hours before hanging outside for the birds to snack on while you enjoy some bird watching!
