Macaroni Crafts ~ A Dozen Roses for Mom

By Anna Hall, Hickory NC Publisher Mom May 9, 2013

Roses are a symbol of love, perfect for special holidays like Mother's Day or Valentine's Day.  Make a personalized bouquet for Mom using your child's handprint.  Note: depending on the age of the child, you may not be able to fit twelve handprints on one sheet of paper (we did this craft when my daughter was 2).  Keep this in mind when selecting the paper to use and adjust accordingly.

What you need:

  • red and green tempera or washable paints
  • paint brushes
  • large sheet of green construction paper (we used 11x17)
  • large sheet of white paper (slightly smaller than the construction paper, or cut about an inch off the top to allow for a border when mounted onto the green sheet)
  • glue
  • red or pink construction paper
  • scissors
  • black marker

What to do:

- Paint the palm of your child's hand with red washable paint.  While wet, stamp the handprint onto the sheet of white paper (

hint: it looks more like a rose bud when the fingers are kept closer together than in the picture above).  Repeat 12 times for a dozen rose buds (or however many will fit on your page).

- Use paint brush and green paint to draw on the stems of the roses.  Set painting aside to dry.

- Cut a heart shape from the red or pink construction paper.  Use a black marker to write a message on the heart (have the child write it if they can, even if they just sign their name).  Ours says "A dozen roses for you!"

- When dry, mount the painting onto the green construction paper, leaving a border along the top and bottom.  This step is optional.

- Glue the heart with your message at the bottom of the page in the center.

Present the sweet bouquet to your loved one on their special day.
