Macaroni Fun ~ Color Scavenger Hunt

By Jennifer Chasse, New River Valley, VA Publisher May 15, 2014
Make your next walk a hunt for specific colors. This is an easy project that can be made as simple as your time / materials / patience allows.

What you'll need:
  • An empty egg carton
  • Paints and paintbrushes

What to do:

Paint the inside of an egg carton different colors. Encourage the children to mix colors together or add black or white to create different hues.

Want it less messy? Use markers or crayons.

Need it even easier? Place crayon pieces inside your egg carton, and/or use a muffin tin.

Head out on a nature walk and have the kids look for things that match the colors. Continue the walk until you fill your carton. Try this any time of the year; even in the winter you might find leaves, rocks, feathers, grasses, shrubs and other natural elements, as well as bottle caps and other debris that match your bins. Poor weather preventing you from going outside?  Use the containers to find items matching items around the house!

I did this project with a group of kids ages 6-12 and all ages enjoyed it.
