Macaroni Fun ~ Snow Tubing at Hawksnest

By Anna Hall, Hickory NC Publisher January 15, 2015

Looking for a fun place to take the family for some winter fun?  Look no further than Hawksnest Snow Tubing!  Located off Hwy 105 just west of Boone in Seven Devils an hour and half drive from Hickory, the park is great for a day trip.  With 30 lanes ranging in length from 400-1000 feet, Hawksnest is the largest snow tubing park on the East Coast. The lanes are spread out over four different areas with two conveyor belts to bring guests back up the hill to the top for more rides. Hawksnest has 100% snow making and lighting on all lanes to provide the best possible conditions and fun for the whole family.

Tubing sessions last 1 hour and 45 minutes and start every two hours beginning at 10am, with the last session at 2pm on Sunday, 4pm Mon-Thur and 6pm Fri, Sat and holidays (MLK & President's Day).  Children must be 3 years or older to snow tube.  It is a good idea to purchase tickets online ahead of time as sessions do sell out; also be sure to arrive early for your session with a pre-printed and signed liability waiver available on Hawksnest's website. Cost is $25 per person on weekdays; $31 on weekends and holidays with an additional fee for parking. The lodge on location offers restroom facilities, a café and coffee bar as well as an observation area.  Ziplining is available year-round at an additional charge.

My family was treated to a fun session of snow tubing at Hawksnest last weekend.  We found the lanes to be well groomed, the perfect width and with ideal walls to keep tubers on track within their own lanes. There is plenty of room to stop yourself at the end of each run with staff spread out over the park to manage spacing to prevent tubers from crashing into one another.  Although there was a large number of guests for our tubing session, we never had to wait for a lane more than a minute or so; with 6-8 rows in each of the four tubing areas, there are plenty of lanes for people to spread out and keep the action moving.  The conveyor belts make the trip back to the top effortless.  Tubes are in great condition with leashes to facilitate pulling it behind you.  The park is located in a scenic area with great views of the mountains in the background. Bring your own family for the perfect snow day of fun!
