Preventing Tooth Decay in Children's Teeth

By sponsored content from SmileStarters February 26, 2015

Regular brushing, flossing and dental visits are key to maintaining good oral and overall health.  To further prevent tooth decay, the following two treatments are recommended to help protect children's teeth.

Sealants - Sealants are thin, plastic coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Getting sealants put on is simple and painless; they are painted on as a liquid and quickly harden to form a shield over the tooth. Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the teeth come in – before decay attacks the teeth. Teenagers and young adults who are prone to decay may also need sealants. Baby teeth, which save space for permanent teeth, may too benefit from sealants, especially if the child's teeth have deep pits and grooves to keep them healthy so they don't fall out early. Around since the 1960s and proven safe and effective, sealants can last up to 10 years. But they need to be checked at regular dental check-ups to make sure they are not chipped or worn away.

Fluoride - Using fluoride toothpaste and drinking fluoridated water can help protect teeth from decay.  Fluoride is an essential ingredient in preventing tooth decay as it makes the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It is also said to reverse premature decay. Fluoride can also be applied as a time-released topical varnish. The varnish is as effective and safe as the fluoride gel used for many years. The application is quicker and easier, and the fluoride varnish does not have the unpleasant gel taste unpopular with some children. Varnish is a new and improved method of decay prevention available to our patients at SmileStarters.

Together, sealants and fluoride can prevent almost all tooth decay.
