Memorial Day is a federal holiday that gives us a day to celebrate and remember the men and women that have given their lives in the service of this country. For many people across the country, this holiday is a sacred day to commemorate the lives of the friends and family members that have sacrificed for the protection of this country and the liberties every American now enjoys. Given the somber nature of this day, there are certain appropriate ways to enjoy this holiday, while still honoring its true purpose and meaning. Here are 7 appropriate ways to observe Memorial Day:

1. Fly the American Flag at half-staff.

2. Visit historic American sites. If you live in a part of the country with a rich history, visit a memorial to fallen soldiers or visit a historic battlefield in an effort to understand the true sacrifice made on behalf of this country.

3. Participate in the National Moment Of Silence. Each Memorial Day, at 3:00 pm, a moment of silence is held that provides Americans to reflect on the true meaning of this holiday.

4. Check for events in your area. Many cities or towns with a rich history of military service among its citizens will have an annual Memorial Day parade.

5. Take flowers or cookies to someone that you know that has served in the military. Take some time out of your day to talk to them and hear their amazing story.

6. If your family has any tradition on this day, such as visiting the graves of family members, flying certain flags, or visiting family memorials, continue those traditions.

7. Since Memorial Day takes place on the last Monday of May, it is a great opportunity to have fun outdoors. Barbecues and vacation getaways are a very popular Memorial Day tradition. If you decide to take a vacation, be sure to take some time out of your day to remember the true meaning of this important day.

If you follow the above guidelines, you will be able to show respect to those in the military as well as teaching your children the importance of freedom. Properly observing this holiday will bring you closer to those that have fought for this great country, as well as creating a bond between you and your heritage. If observed properly, Memorial Day can be a great reminder of the rich history of this country and the great sacrifices that have been made to get us where we are today.
