NEW Coding Club at Hickory Public Library

September 25, 2017

Is your teen/tween interested in computing and may want to learn how to create their own games, websites and apps and change the world through code? Hickory Public Library invites 6th-12th graders to explore coding in a fun and friendly way at its brand new Girls Who Code Club. The club meets weekly for about an hour on Wednesday afternoons at 4pm at Ridgeview Branch Library. Meetings will run through December 2017 and new members are welcome anytime!

Girls Who Code is a national nonprofit organization leading the movement to inspire, educate and equip girls with the computing skills to pursue 21st-century opportunities. Computing skills are the most sought-after in the US job market, with demand growing 3X the national average. Computing is where the jobs are โ€” and where they will be in the future โ€” but fewer than 1 in 5 computer science graduates are female. With women making up almost half the workforce, itโ€™s imperative for our economy that weโ€™re preparing our girls for the future of work. By providing learning opportunities and a supportive network of peers and role models, Girls Who Code clubs across the nation are building the largest pipeline of future female engineers in the United States.

In a Girls Who Code Club, 6th to 12th graders explore coding in a fun and friendly environment. Students learn core computer science concepts of loops, variables, conditionals, and functions that form the basis for all programming languages through projects based on their interests, such as music, art or games. The curriculum is designed for students with varying experience levels, with lessons for students with zero coding experience to lessons that introduce college-level concepts. In addition to acquiring knowledge, participants build confidence, learn teamwork and make friends.

The Girls to Code Club at Hickory Public Library is open to girls AND GUYSย and there's no cost to participate. Check it out this Wednesday at 4pm at Ridgeview Branch Library located at 706 1st Street SW in Hickory. For more information, call (828) 345-6037.
