Young Eagles Day

Free introductory flights monthly for youth age 7 through 17

By The Blue Ridge Chapter of the EAA, Inc. May 30, 2013

If you’re between ages 7–17 you can take a free EAA Young Eagles Flight. You’ll fly with a licensed, local pilot who will help you take the first steps to make your dream of flying come true. See and experience what real pilots do on the ground and in the air.

The EAA Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 7 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.

What’s a Young Eagles Flight like?

  • On the ground: Your pilot explains what will happen during the flight. You may talk about the airplane, review an aeronautical chart (or map), and compile a careful “walk around” preflight inspection of the airplane.
  • Just before take-off: Your pilot helps you buckle your seat belt and describes the interior of the airplane, including the instrument panel.
  • In the air: The flight lasts between 15 and 20 minutes.  You’ll see the earth and sky in a new and exciting way. You’ll experience the wonderful freedom of flight that many people only dream about. And, if you want, your pilot may let you take the controls!
  • Back on the ground: There’s more time for you to ask questions about the flight. Your pilot is happy to tell you more about flying and their particular airplane.

Free Young Eagle Flights monthly at the Hickory Regional Airport for Youth age 7 through 17, generally held the second Saturday of each month (weather permitting). Check-in 9:00am in the Terminal Building. Look for Young Eagles Day on the MacKid calendar each month.

Please let us know in advance if you are bringing a group so we can plan accordingly.  For Boy Scout Troops, we can facilitate the Aviation Merit Badge.  Scoutmasters should contact al@bormuth.com for details. For more information, contact Al Bormuth at 828-403-4745 or e-mail al@bormuth.com.
