Macaroni Menu ~ Portable Snack Options

By Anna Hall, Hickory NC Publisher July 25, 2013

It's not easy finding healthy and nutritious snacks for road trips or traveling.  Many pre-packaged options are not always the healthiest and getting food on the go can get quite expensive. Prepare ahead of time and bring these portable and travel-friendly snacks.

Put celery sticks inside a peanut butter jar!  Simply cut up some celery stalks and place inside of a plastic jar with an inch or two of peanut butter at the bottom.  You may also choose to sprinkle in some raisins into the peanut butter for a delicious ants on a log snack.  Make sure the top and sides of the jar are clean of peanut butter so hands don't get sticky and dirty as they reach inside; simply wipe with a paper towel to remove any remaining peanut butter from the upper parts of the jar.

Use empty sour cream container to store veggies (or fruit) and dip!  Fill a clean and empty baby food jar or small plastic container with ranch dressing and place in the middle of a clean and empty sour cream or cottage cheese container.  Arrange various veggies such as baby carrots, cut up celery stalks, grape tomatoes and broccoli florets around the sides.  Place lid on both containers and off you go!  Or use a small single-serve yogurt for the dressing in the middle and arrange apple slices or other fruit around the sides.  Remember to sprinkle lemon juice on the apple slices to keep from turning brown.  Look here.

Make Cheerios necklaces!  String Cheerios, Fruit Loops, pretzels, and other snacks with a hole onto a clean yarn or string to make edible necklaces.  Kids will love eating off of them. Look here.

Other healthy portable snacks without any prep:

  • trail mix (nuts/seeds, dried fruit, etc)
  • fruit like apples and bananas
  • granola or protein bars
  • cheese sticks
  • tuna pouches
  • hard-boiled eggs
