September 19, 2013

The Hickory Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with The Salvation Army of Hickory is celebrating the National Day of Play on Saturday, September 21.

The City has partnered with The Salvation Army and the Boys and Girls Club of America to encourage all citizens to get outside and play on this National Day of Play.  The community is invited to attend an event at the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground at Kiwanis Park at 805 6th Street, SW, Hickory, on Saturday, September 21 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“The Parks and Recreation Department encourages everyone to get active in their community by offering programs and events for all citizens to participate in all year long,” said Mack McLeod, Director of the City of Hickory’s Parks and Recreation.  “But, on the National Day of Play, we want to take time to recognize that being a “Playful City USA” is important to our community, and it makes Hickory a great place to live and be active.”

The National Day of Play event will host music, games, face painting, arts and crafts, contests, and more, all for free.  Refreshments will be provided.

Bring the family and join the City and The Salvation Army of Hickory to celebrate play in the City of Hickory at this special event. Worldwide Day of Play is an annual event designed to encourage children and parents to turn off the television and play, especially outdoors. It began on October 1, 2005 when Nickelodeon and its sister channels suspend programming for three hours from 12 Noon to 3PM ET/PT to allow children to attend local events to get out and be active.
