Youth Sports ~ Hickory Parks & Recreation

Registration now underway

The Hickory Parks and Recreation Department is now registering children for youth sports leagues.  Parents of children who have previously registered their child through the master registration system may call 828-322-7046 to register.  Parents of any child that has not participated in a program must come by the Parks and Recreation Department administrative office at 1451 8th Street Drive, NE to fill out a registration card between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  A birth certificate must be presented at time of registration.  A $40.00 non-resident fee for persons living outside the city limits of Hickory must be paid at the time of registration.  The registration fee is waived for children of volunteer coaches.

Listed below are the leagues offered and their skills assessment dates.

Indoor Soccer: Any boy or girl age 7 - 14 is eligible to participate in the program.  The age divisions are:

  • 7- 8 year olds (must be seven by August 31, 2013, can’t be nine before August 31, 2013)
  • 9 - 10 year olds (must be nine by August 31, 2013, can't be 11 before August 31, 2013)
  • 11 - 12 year olds (must be 11 before August 31, 2013 and can’t be 13 before August 31, 2013)
  • 13 - 14 year olds (must be 13 before August 31, 2013 and can’t be 15 before August 31, 2013)

August 31 is the age cut off date for all divisions.  There will be a separate girls division offered provided enough girls sign up. Skills assessments will be held on Tuesday, November 5 and Thursday, November 7 at Neill W. Clark, Jr. Recreation Center.  The skills assessment times are: 7- 8 year olds 5:30 p.m., 9 - 10 year olds 6:15 p.m., 11 - 12 year olds 7:00 p.m. and 13 - 14 year olds 7:45 p.m.  Only those aging up a division or new players must attend one skills assessment.  Games will be played on Saturdays at Neill Clark Recreation Center.

Bantam Basketball: Any boy age seven or eight years old (must be seven by August 31, 2013 and will not be nine before August 31, 2013) or any girl ages six, seven, or eight (must be six by August 31, 2013 and will not be nine before August 31, 2013) will be eligible to register. Skills assessments will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 and Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. for girls and 6:30 p.m. for boys at the Highland Recreation Center located at 1451 8th Street Drive, NE.  All new players must attend one skills assessment in order to be placed on a team.

Instructional Mites Basketball: The age groups will be five and six year old boys and five year old girls (four year olds must be five before August 31, 2013 and cannot be seven before August 31, 2013).  The instructional program will be held at Highland Recreation Center. The program will begin on Monday, November 18, 2013 with practices on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  Instructors will be Parks and Recreation Department personnel and volunteer coaches.  Following the end of the one and one half week instructional period, the players will be placed on a team and games will be played.  A separate girl’s league will be provided in each age division if there are enough girls participating.  The program will run for approximately six to eight weeks.  All new five and six year olds are asked to attend the one and a half week instructional session.  Returning players will be notified by their coach of the first practice time.

Pee Wee Basketball: open to anyone 9 and 10 years old (must be nine before August 31, 2013 and cannot be 11 before August 31, 2013).  Only those players aging up a division or new players must attend one skills assessment session in order to be placed on a team.  Skills assessments will take place at the Highland Recreation Center on Monday and Wednesday, November 4 & 6 with girls at 5:30pm and boys at 6:30pm. 

Midget Basketball: open to anyone 11 or 12 years old (must be 11 before August 31, 2013 and cannot be 13 before August 31, 2013). Only those players aging up a division or new players must attend one skills assessment session in order to be placed on a team. Skills assessments will take place at the Highland Recreation Center on Monday and Wednesday, November 4 & 6, with girls at 5:30pm and boys at 6:30pm.

Junior Basketball: open to anyone 13 - 15 years old (must be 13 before August 31, 2013 and cannot be 16 before August 31, 2013).  Games will be played at Ridgeview Recreation Center on Mondays and Thursdays beginning at 6:00 p.m.  The season is scheduled to begin in January. Skills assessments for Junior League will be held on Tuesday, November 12 or Thursday, November 14 at 6:00 p.m. at Ridgeview Recreation Center.

Youth Wrestling: Boys and girls ages 5 – 13 (must be 5 before August 31, 2013 and cannot be 14 before August 31, 2013) may register. An organizational meeting will be held on Monday, October 21 at Neill W. Clark, Jr. Recreation Center Main Building on Tuesday, October 29 and will be held during the week at Westmont Recreation Center.  Matches will be held on Saturdays and will begin in December. 

All children participating in any league are encouraged to purchase accident insurance coverage.  The $6.00 insurance fee covers the participant for a one-year period from March 1, 2013 to February 28, 2014 in all activities sponsored and supervised by the Parks and Recreation Department and must be paid at registration.  The $250,000 coverage is primary coverage that pays regardless of other insurance, directly to the participant, doctor, or hospital.
