There are many choices for your child’s education, and educational needs must be tailored to match the unique nature of each student. Hickory Day School has been a part of the Hickory community for the past 22 years and serves students from transitional kindergarten (4-year-olds) to 8th grade. HDS is an independent, non-sectarian school in Catawba County and takes seriously its motto of “thinking globally, acting locally.”
Hickory Day is one of only 15 elementary schools in North Carolina accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). The IBO emphasizes a transdisciplinary approach to learning by which connections can be made across the curriculum between core subjects like language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Nothing is taught in isolation, and the school’s low pupil-teacher ratio allows students’ individual needs to be addressed by a caring staff of teaching professionals. Co-curricular subjects like visual arts, Spanish, wellness/fitness, and performing arts are a regular part of every student’s day, and the school values knowledge gained from field-study experiences undertaken throughout the year.
Please join the school for one of its 2016 Admissions Open Houses on February 25 and March 23 from 9am to 11am. You may also contact the school office at (828) 256-9492 for a private tour. Hickory Day School is located at 2535 21st Avenue NE, Hickory, NC 28601. Come see what makes Hickory Day School such a unique and special educational choice in Catawba County!

Editor's Note: Prompted by concerns over budgetary cuts in North Carolina's public school system and my daughter's lack of challenge and enthusiasm coupled with her constant worries about required testing, my husband and I decided to check out Hickory Day School two years ago when Emily was going into the third grade. We immediately fell in love with the school's teaching style, philosophies, worldly view and well-rounded curriculum. The school's low student to teacher ratio allows for school work to be customized for each child's levels, needs and individuality; the philosophies and principles of the IB program encourage inquiry and research and foster self-awareness, global citizenship and a love of learning. Since enrolling her at Hickory Day, we have seen Emily become excited about learning, come out of her shell to try new things, take charge of her school work and push herself to higher levels. As a parent thrilled with the education her child is receiving at the school, I invite you to check out for yourself what makes Hickory Day School a wonderful and unique learning environment for children in our community.
