Fun Ideas to Celebrate the Last Day of School

By Jennifer Boaz, Lenoir NC Mom & MacKid Guest Writer June 2, 2016

I can’t believe the end of school is right around the corner! Kids get so excited about summertime approaching, so why not create a memorable last day of school for them? There are some fun things you can do to ensure your littles remember that last day of school like they are rockstars! Check out some ways to make them cherish some end-of-school surprises that just might become a regular occurrence in your household whenever June rolls around!

  1. If your child rides the bus, meet him at the bus stop and surprise him with silly string and balloons. Break out your artistic skills, and decorate the sidewalk with funny chalk pictures and colorful drawings to show your enthusiasm for the last day of school.
  2. If you pick your child up, have a car full of balloons, decorate the outside of the car, and even bring flowers to show how proud you are of your little accomplishing another school year.
  3. Send your child to school with a blank t-shirt (pick any color your child loves!) and a sharpie, and tell her that all her classmates are to autograph her shirt.
  4. Do you pack your child’s lunch? Create a compilation of their most favorite foods and treats. Send an extra special note letting your child know how proud you are of her... lots of smiley faces, hearts, and stickers add bonus points!
  5. Make a list of fun questions to ask your little the last day of school. Ex: “What was the funniest thing you saw at school this year?” Conduct an interview and save the questions to ask every year until the child graduates. What fun to look back at all the answers! Take a picture of the child holding the interview questions to document yearly growth spurts.
  6. Create a special breakfast. Make a yummy breakfast that your child normally wouldn’t expect to have. Cupcakes? Why yes! Pancakes with sprinkles? Absolutely!
  7. Compile a Summer Bucket List. Take a few moments to create some fun activities the whole family could participate in throughout the warm weather. Go hiking, visit local water parks, go on a treasure hunt, sign up for an awesome summer camp, stay up late and make smores... the possibilities are endless!
  8. Have a last-day-of-school water party. Water balloons, sprinklers, bubbles, and popsicles can make for a wonderful and refreshing afternoon.
  9. Send in your child's bookbag a notebook to collect names and addresses for summer playdates. If you are feeling extra creative, help your child make a penpal list and write letters to their friends during summer vacation.
  10. Go to the bookstore and pick out a new book to kick off summer. It’s always wise to continue reading throughout the summer months to maintain those important skills they have learned during the school year.
  11. Play a funny game the last night of school. A fun quiz to play with kids (and adults!) is "Would you rather…" For example, "Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?" Great conversation starter for those warm summer nights on the back porch.

No matter what, let that precious little know how proud you are of the accomplishment of making it through another year of school. Cherish every moment, and make memories every chance you get!
