Macaroni Craft ~ Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals

By Jamie Clark, Macaroni Kid Publisher, Roanoke VA August 11, 2016

Get the kids into an Olympic spirit by creating salt-dough medals to wear as you cheer for your favorite athletes.

What You Need:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup water
  • acrylic paints in gold, silver and bronze
  • paint brushes
  • ribbon

What To Do:

  1. Combine the flour and salt in a mixing bowl and add water gradually. Knead it until it gets a dough-like consistency. If it's too sticky, add more flour. If it won't hold together, add more water one teaspoon at a time.
  2. Shape salt dough into a circle about one centimeter thick. I used a mason jar lid to help shape it, but cookie cutters or other household items work great, too.
  3. Using a straw, poke a hole at the top (this is where the string will go through).
  4. Press a 1, 2, and 3 into each shape. I used molds from a Play-Doh® kit.
  5. Place onto a baking sheet (I also used wax paper to help keep it from sticking) and bake for about 2 hours at 200 degrees, turning once during "baking."
  6. Once they have cooled, it's time to paint.

Now your medals are ready to wear with pride!
