Hickory's Lowes Foods City Park ~ An Industrial Whimsy Playspace

By Elizabeth Wise, Hickory NC Mom & MacKid Guest Writer January 5, 2017

The evening before the holiday weekend, we ventured out to the new park in downtown Hickory. The children were immediately captivated by the large orb in the sky. The park is eclectic in design; modern industrial is prominent with whimsy and subdued touches of natural elements. I was taken by the large musical instruments and started to play a tune. My children were called to the orb in the sky and quickly ran up the turfgrass hill. There were several children running around but as the sun started to set, we were quickly alone to enjoy this new addition to our city.

We were at this park for a different reason that day; we came to meet our Physical Therapist. We love to try new places for our son to explore and to increase his strength and abilities. This park is small but the equipment was a gross motor paradise. The play area provides a hill, ropes to climb, a circular treadmill type toy, and balance equipment. Honestly, all parks provide this if you look hard enough. However, the modern design was intriguing and made our therapy session a blast!

If you are in downtown Hickory for any reason, stop by and visit the Lowes Foods City Park for yourself! Located on the corner of Third Street NW and Main Avenue NW, the park’s components consist of water play, art, education, music, local craftsmanship, and top of the line, modern play equipment. The musical area was fun for the kids but I noticed several adults trying their hand at the drums. In the summer,  the whimsical tile river and map of our region will spring to life in the park's splash pad.  Kids of all ages will appreciate the park nestled in beautiful Downtown Hickory. We hope to see you there!
