Spring Fever at School?

By Shelly Cain, Hickory NC Mom & MacKid Guest Writer March 28, 2017

As the school year begins to wind down, tensions at school sometimes begin to rise. Everyone gets spring fever (teachers included), and it is easy to get off track this time of year.

I am going to share with you a few tips to stay on track and a few things this teacher wants you to know.

Stay on Track

  • Maintain an early (or normal) bed time. As it gets darker much later, it is easy to push bed time back. Children need more sleep than adults. Make sure you get your child to bed at a decent time, so you don’t see an increase in behavior or attention problems.
  • Keep open communication with your child’s teacher. Teachers don’t always have the time to contact you, but they will take the time to respond when you contact them. Make sure to ask if you need help or have questions!
  • Keep reading. No matter what your child’s age, they need to be reading on a regular basis at home. Make reading fun in the spring. To change things up, try an outdoor space with a special chair or a blanket in the year.

What This Teacher Wants You to Know

  • Teachers love their students. This time of year teachers may start counting down to summer, but that doesn’t mean we won’t miss your child when we send them off. During the school year, we spend more time with your child than you do and definitely more time than we get with our own families. Don’t discount how much we care about their future.
  • Please don’t criticize a teacher in front of your child. No one is perfect, and we know that you aren’t always going to like all our decisions. Just like the old saying goes, you can’t please everyone. It is extremely difficult to help, teach, and discipline a child who thinks that their parents don’t respect their teacher. If you must get your frustrations out, please don’t do it in front of your child.
  • Spring is a very stressful time of year for teachers. The end of the school year typically brings testing, which is stressful for teachers, parents, and students. Teachers also seem to have an increase in paperwork as we get ready to close out the year. On top of that, the students get just a little tired of each other and ready for summer.

I think the majority of teachers would simply ask for patience and support as spring fever kicks in. Follow the above tips for an easier spring, and count down those days until summer!
