Tips for a Frugal and Fun Easter

By Shelly Cain, Hickory NC Mom & MacKid Guest Writer April 6, 2017

The Easter holiday can be fun without breaking the bank! Here are some tips for a fun and frugal Easter for your kids:

  1. Easter isn't Christmas. Kids don't make huge present lists for Easter, and most don't expect the Easter bunny to fulfill all their wishes. It is a holiday that wasn't really designed as a gift giving holiday. Keep Easter baskets simple.
  2. Use Easter baskets to provide items needed for spring and summer. Bubbles, outdoor play items, and swimsuits are great ideas for Easter baskets. You will probably be buying the items anyway this spring, so use them as the gifts in the Easter basket.
  3. Buy plastic eggs and baskets on clearance after Easter. If you haven't already purchased some for this year, consider a functional item as a basket like a sand pail or an umbrella. Real eggs also go on sale around Easter. You could hide boiled eggs for kids to find.
  4. Shop sales and use coupons for Easter basket candy. Easter candy is fairly cheap, if you watch the sales. Just don't overbuy, because you don't want candy sitting around for weeks.
Some items to skip for a frugal Easter are large toy purchases, stuffed animals for anyone over 2 years old, and completely Easter themed toys. These things will add extra stress and money to your holiday, and most likely won't be what you child enjoys the most.

Finally, don't forget to involve your child or children. Talking to them will help you figure out what traditions are most important to them.

Have a happy and frugal Easter!
