StoryWalk at Lake James State Park ~ May 15-31

May 14, 2017

In 2007, Anne Fergusson with the Vermont Department of Health had the idea to combine literacy and exercise. Teaming up with the Kellog Hubbard Library in Montpelier, they attached laminated pages from a childrenā€™s book onto wooden posts. In the ten years since, these StoryWalks have gone up in all 50 states and at least 11 countries.

Now, StoryWalk is coming to Lake James State Park with "Diary of a Spider" on display along Sandy Cliff Overlook Trail in the Catawba River Area of the park. This 1/4 mile walk is suited for kids of all ages so bring the whole family.Ā

NC State Parks education team has been busy laminating their favorite nature-based childrenā€™s books to create StoryWalks throughout our state parks. Titles such as "Be a Friend to Trees" and "Diary of a Spider" have previously made the rounds at Dismal Swamp State Park, Raven Rock State Park, and Cravers Creek State Park. ā€œAs a parent, I love that the signs inspire young ones to hurry along the trail to find the next one. But, they also help make sure the kids donā€™t get too far ahead since they stop to read the next page,ā€ says Education Manager Sean Higgins.

StoryWalk will be on display at Lake James State Park May 15-31, 2017, so donā€™t miss out.
