Spread Cheer This Summer with Kindness Rocks

By Shelly Cain, Hickory NC Mom & MacKid Guest Writer June 20, 2017

Have you seen any fun, painted rocks around our community? We recently found a rock at the State Employees’ Credit Union. My four year old was quite excited, especially because the rock was pink! The rock was painted with Enjoy Life! When I told my daughter we were supposed to take it and hide it somewhere else, she adamantly told me, “No mama! We have to leave it here for someone else!”

So, we hid the rock in another (very) close by location, and I began my search for more information about the Kindness Rocks movement.

From the research I was able to do, the kindness rocks movement started near Cape Cod, and it has spread all over the world. The idea is to paint rocks with inspirational messages and leave them throughout the community spreading kindness. If you find a rock, you can leave it for someone else to find, hide it in a different location, or keep it and consider painting a rock of your own to replace the one you’ve kept.

Want to get involved? Spend some time with your child painting rocks with positive messages and happiness and hide them around the local area. If you happen to find a rock, take a picture, share on the Color Hickory, Color Catawba, Color Burke, Color Caldwell, Color Alexander or Color Wilkes Facebook pages, and hide it somewhere for someone else to find.

This is a fun project to do with your family. It gives you a chance to be creative and spread joy to others. Here are some tips on painting rocks at home:

  • Collect rocks by going on a nature hike or pick up a small bag at craft or dollar store.
  • The kids can have fun cleaning them in a bowl of soapy water or bring in the water table from storage.
  • Painting is easy and fun! Acrylics work best for weather but can damage clothing.
  • Write simple messages in Sharpie (You are special, You are kind, I like you, etc)
  • Scatter for others to find. Make a special trip or just put some in the car to drop while running errands.
