Nine Ways to Stay Cool and Hydrated

By Christel M. Hoydic, Macaroni Kid Publisher, Middletown CT July 18, 2017

We all know the importance of drinking water daily, especially in the summer heat, but getting your kids to drink it can sometimes be a chore. Here are a few ways to help kids choose water:

  1. Be a role model ~ lead by example.
  2. Buy fun cups, special water bottles, or personalized water canisters.
  3. Add fruit.
  4. Stop what you're doing and challenge your kids to a chug-a-thon!
  5. Offer a fun reward to the person who drinks the most water, or a certain amount of water first.
  6. Add a silly straw.
  7. Make fun ice cubes ~ either silly shapes, colors, or add a small prize inside!
  8. Let them in on the pee test ~ Moms know everything!
  9. Play water pong (similar to the party game, but with water). My son loves this game and you wouldn't believe how eagerly he drinks water while playing.

Not sure how to play water pong? Here's a quick run-down:

  1. Fill 12 cups half-way with water.
  2. Arrange 6 cups in a triangle on one side of a table, and form another 6-cup triangle a few feet apart at the other end of the table, with points facing the other triangle.
  3. Players stand behind their triangle cups and take turns throwing ping-pong balls, aiming for the opposite player's cups.
  4. When a ball lands inside a cup, the contents of that cup are consumed by the other team and the cup is removed from the table. The first team to eliminate all of the opponent's cups is the winner.
