Tips for Saving on School Supplies

By Shelly Cain, Hickory NC Mom & MacKid Guest Writer July 10, 2017

I know, I know. It feels like school just ended, and you are probably wondering, “Why do I need to think about school supplies now?!?”

School supply sales are typically the best during the last few weeks of July, so get those supply lists ready! Don’t procrastinate in this case. It will lead to less selection and over priced items. Many schools send supply lists with final report cards or post them on their websites, so starting with a list is a big help. Here are a few useful tips to help save you money when shopping:

  1. Stick to what is on the list and brand specific. As a teacher, I can tell you the number one thing that will save you money is buying the name brand of most items (especially if the teacher specifies it). Cheap supplies don’t hold up well, and it causes you to have to replace them sooner.
  2. Don’t buy the whole list at the same store, unless you can price match. Office Depot, Target, Walgreens, and CVS all have great sales on school supplies. Watch for coupons to use too!
  3. Keep decorated or fancy things to a few personal items. The reality is that some items will probably be for your child’s personal use and some for classroom community use. Only spend extra for cute supplies if you are sure it will hold up and be appreciated by your child.
  4. Don’t buy a ton of new clothes. Keep clothes purchases to a good pair of tennis shoes (if needed), and maybe one new first day outfit. Your child will be wearing their summer clothes for a while still, and the fall/winter clothes will be discounted more later.
  5. If you can afford to buy extras, buy more pencils and paper. They are the cheapest they will be all year during the summer, and you will probably need to restock your child later on in the school year.
  6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you have several children or are just down on your luck, don’t be afraid to seek out help. Most schools and many local churches have supply drives, and they will have your basic needs.

I hope these tips can help keep a little extra money in your pocket this summer. Enjoy your summer break, and don’t stress over back to school!
