Mile High Kite Festival ~ September 2-3

Spend Labor Day weekend in Beech Mountain!

August 30, 2017

Close out the summer on a high note at Beech Mountain's Mile High Kite Festival, flying into its 15th year this Labor Day weekend. The annual festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, September 2 and 3, 2017 from 10am-4pm in the town's kite field at the Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria. Located at more than 5,000 feet in elevation, the meadow makes it easy for kids of all ages to sail a kite more than a mile above sea level.

The Mile High Kite Festival features kite-flying music, prizes, and free kites to the first 300 kids (12 and under). Prizes are awarded for the biggest kite, smallest kite and best decorated kite. Activities include races with kids pulling parachute kites, face painting, and a variety of craft and food vendors. On Sunday afternoon, two kite clubs โ€“ the Richmond Air Force club and Charlotteโ€™s Wings Across Carolina Kiting and Okra Society (WACKOS) โ€“ put on kite-flying demonstrations.

Come make a weekend of it in eastern America's highest town! Stay for an all-ages street dance in front of town hall on Saturday evening from 6-9pm. The parking lot is covered with sand and a deejay plays a variety of fun dance music. Scenic chairlift rides to the mountaintop are available all weekend long and folks can enjoy a concert on the lawn Sunday evening following the festival.

Admission to the Mile High Kite Festival is free. There is a $5 fee for parking. For more information and lodging specials, visit www.beechmtn.com or call 800-468-5506.
