Gratitude Jar ~ A New Year Tradition

By Jayme N. Linton, Ph.D., Hickory NC Mom, LRU Assistant Professor of Education & MacKid Guest Writer January 1, 2018

Consider a new tradition for the New Year: a gratitude jar. Simply place an empty jar and some strips of paper in a central location in your home, and encourage your family to jot down things they’re thankful for. A gratitude jar can help your family adopt a more grateful mindset throughout the year.

Our gratitude jar stays on our dining table year round. Dinner time is a good time to talk about things we’re grateful for and add them to the jar. When friends and family members join us for meals, they sometimes add their own notes to the jar.

Each year on New Year’s Eve, we empty the jar and take turns reading aloud the blessings of the year. We tell stories, reminiscing over memories and moments shared. Then, on New Year’s Day, we begin adding new notes to the jar. With the gratitude jar, we don’t lose sight of the many reasons we have to be thankful.
