Lots of Sun and Fun at Southside Park

By Iris Hartness, Maiden NC Mom and MacKid Guest Writer May 24, 2018

Southside Park in Newton is a 27-acre park and is the location of many annual events sponsored by the Newton Parks and Recreation Department. Each year for Easter, the park hosts an ideal egg hunt that draws many area families to join in the festivities. In the summer, the park’s open-air amphitheater transforms into a movie theatre under the stars, showing great family films at no cost and even includes popcorn for guests to enjoy. It's also where The Green Room Community Theatre hosts its annual Shakespeare in the Park, another fabulous and free community event in the summer.

On any day, Southside Park offers many options for outdoor fun. There are numerous picnic tables, two picnic shelters, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits and a large green area for soccer, frisbee, kite flying or a picnic.  For families, Southside has a play area with swings and slides and a mile-long gravel trail for walking, stroller jogging or even a bike ride. The park is also the location of several cross-country meets for area high schools. If you are looking for a great place for a long run, this is the place for you. With reasonable rental rates, your group is sure to find just what you need to host an awesome event of your own. Bathroom facilities are available at the park.

Southside Park is located off Hwy 321 Business, behind National Guard Armory in Newton. Be sure to check our event calendar for upcoming events at Newton’s Southside Park, including the free summer featured films and Shakespeare in the Park.
