I have had several people ask me about my experience with paid swim lessons. I would say that swim lessons have been one of the best things for my 3-year-old. The lessons have encouraged 3 C’s in my daughter.
- Courage - Do you know how much courage it takes a child to jump in the water for the first time? After 4 sessions of swim lessons, watching young and old swimmers alike, I can attest that it takes great courage. It is heartwarming to see a room full of adults encourage an older boy to take the plunge.
- Confidence - It may only be 30 minutes per week, but I can truly see the confidence develop weekly. At the beginning of lessons last summer, my little one couldn’t do anything and was uncomfortable in the water. At her last lesson, she jumped in the pool to the instructor and swam with proper form only using a pool noodle.
- Character - Meeting new kids and new teachers helps a young person develop their character. It is also character building to take on a challenge and overcome it. I have seen my timid little girl do things I never thought she would.
My take on swim lessons? You get what you pay for! If you can only afford the free lessons, it is a great opportunity for some pool time and to possibly learn some new skills. If you are looking for something more or to help a child overcome a fear, try finding a business or place that offers quality lessons for an appropriate cost. Here are a few to consider:
