Redwood Park ~ Caldwell County's Park of the Year

By Jennifer Boaz, Lenoir NC Mom & MacKid Guest Writer July 31, 2018

Redwood Park, located at 450 Redwood Street in Hudson, was named 2017 Park of the Year for Caldwell County! It also won this award from 2007-2012. The 38-acre park has several playgrounds that are ADA compliant, as well as several walking trails. There is also a nine-hole disc golf course, a dog park, picnic shelters, a zipline, a weight and fitness facility, tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, ball fields, and a gymnasium.

The outdoor pool at Redwood Park is a great place for the kiddos to cool off during the summer months! Colorful slides, a spray feature in the kiddie area, and a diving board make this a fun attraction for kids of all ages. The pool's operating season runs from early June through late August with daytime hours Monday-Sunday and evening swim time Tesday and Thursday nights. Lifeguards are always on duty during operating hours. Admission ranges from $1-5, based on age. Click here for full details about the pool.

Several walking trails are available throughout the beautiful woods around Redwood Park, ranging in distance from .30 miles to 3.1 miles. The newest trail is The Loop which is 3.1 miles and connects Redwood Park, CCC&TI, Hudson Elementary School, Hudson Middle School, and downtown Hudson. The most popular trail is the Lighted Trail which is .50 miles. It is paved, ADA accessible and well-lit. It does not allow bicycles, skateboards, or roller blades. The Glenn T. Hickman Trail is a paved 1.5 miles trail and is suitable for biking and walking. For a great nature walk with the kids to learn about plant and animal life, check out the Barton & Estoy Hayes Trail. Maps of each trail are available at the Hudson Recreation Center.

The nine-hole disc golf course is located behind the pool on a lovely grassy area leading to some of the walking trails. Discs are not provided so be sure to bring your own! Kids 12 and under will want to check out the zipline which operates spring through fall. There is also a dog park on property, which is free of charge and open from sunrise to sunset. It is set back in the woods and is a great place to let your fur babies run free. Please click here for guidelines before bringing your pup to the dog park.

Picnic shelters are available to rent for $20/hour for the small shelter (seats 45 people) located near the Disc Golf Course, or the large shelter for $40/hour (seats 85 people) located in the upper park near the playground. There is no rental fee for churches in the city. The recreation building, which includes a fitness center, gymnasium and multi-purpose room, is also available for public use. Various programs are offered throughout the year at the park and rec center, including youth sports and community events.
