6 Tips to Ease the Dreaded Homework Routine

By High Country Academy September 25, 2018

Let's face it. For most us, the homework routine is certainly not the highlight of our day. Maybe it's the amount of homework. Maybe your child is learning math differently than how you learned it. Maybe it's the million other things your family has going on each day. We get it.

Here are a few tips to help ease the homework routine:

  1. Set up a homework-friendly area in your home. Make sure students have a well-lit place to complete homework, with supplies easily within reach: pencils, pens, paper, a ruler - whatever your child needs. This will minimize the "up, down" stalling technique perfected by so many kids.
  2. Establish a regular study time. Some students work best in the afternoon, following a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait until after dinner. Find what works best for your child and your schedule.
  3. Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music, video games, or cell phones. Think about how much more work adults accomplish without all those distractions; same goes for kids!
  4. Be a motivator and monitor. Ask your child about assignments, quizzes, and tests. Give encouragement, check completed homework, and make yourself available for questions and concerns. This will keep you up-to-date on what your child is learning, and it also shows that you care!
  5. Praise their work and efforts. Post a good test or art project on the refrigerator. Mention academic achievements to relatives. Plan a special dinner out. And remember, 100s and As are not the only grades to be praised. If your child is
showing improvement at any level, it's brag-worthy!
  6. If there are continuing problems with homework, get help. Talk about it with your child's teacher. Some students have trouble seeing the board and may need glasses. Others might need an evaluation for a learning problem or attention
disorder. Some may need help organizing their assignments.
