The Fonta Flora State Trail in Morganton is my family's favorite place for mountain biking. Accessible from the Fonta Flora County Park entrance or the Linville Access Area off NC Hwy 126, the 29-miles of trails around Lake James are part of a planned 70-80-mile foot and bike trail that will eventually lead all the way to Asheville. The trail is named after the community that flourished on the shores of the lake in the 1800s but was flooded when Lake James was created between 1916-1923 through the damming of the Catawba and Linville rivers and Paddy's Creek.
The Fonta Flora State Trail is open year-round for hiking and biking. The natural surface is well-maintained and smooth. While there are plenty of hills, some more gradual than others, there are no major obstacles like mounds or rollers. The single-track trail, roughly 5 feet in width, is wide enough for passing and is well marked, with plenty of distance for customizable routes of various length.
Our favorite is the 3.5 mile loop starting and ending at the county park entrance parking lot, meandering around the edge of the lake. We usually do two laps with our 13-year-old, sometimes adding the additional 1+ mile connector to the Linville Access Area, which does require a creek crossing that's not too challenging, with boulders arranged in the creek to rock hop while carrying your bike across. Pets are welcome on the trail as long as they are "under your direct control;" our pup loves running alongside of us making the trail a great spot for her to get her exercise.
The reward is not only great exercise for all but so many beautiful views along the way. The trail travels through the woods, at the edge of the lake and over bridges. There are spots where one can stop to admire or access the lake for wading or splashing during the summer months, if so desired, even a spot with a rope swing. The trail is also great for hiking with little ones that may not be ready yet for an off-road trail. For beginning riders, we find the trail easier than those at the Lake Hickory Trail System. Kid and pet-friendly, the trail is perfect for the whole family! For more great places to ride, check out our list of local family-friendly bike paths, greenways and trails.
