Go See the Fairest of Them All in Green Room's Snow White

By Iris Hartness, Publisher of Hickory - W Piedmont Macaroni Kid April 9, 2019

The Green Room Community Theatre’s youth production of Snow White is a beautiful and creative retelling of the folk tale of Grimm Brothers' lore.  Although not a film adaptation, the play Snow White presents the familiar, woeful tale of a rejected princess, who is embraced by a musical band of mythical friends.  In the production, the audience is invited into Snow White’s enchanted world with the help of puppeteers, who serve as various characters, as well as narrators throughout the show.

A highlight of the show is the seven dwarves who are played by a delightful and curious crew, each with their own distinct and hilarious personality.  Simple (6th Grader Max Charles), Sweetie (1st Grader Sophie Gibson), and Snippy (3rd Grader Ivey Rogers), just to name a few, bring great energy and many laughs to the production.  Their introductory song gives each actor and actress a chance to shine in their respective roles, and they all are exceptional!  The entire cast does a fantastic job creating the immersive world of Snow White.  Lorelai Miller, a high school junior, plays the Evil Queen expertly.  And, of course, the namesake performance of Snow White by 8th Grader Juliet Mingle is heartfelt throughout the show.

The Green Room Community Theatre always delivers an outstanding production quality, and Snow White is no exception.  The Germanic-inspired sets and life-sized puppets are meticulously designed and are, in themselves, beautiful examples of folk art.  The ornate, handcrafted costumes celebrate the medieval setting of the story, as well as provide whimsy and charm.  The innovative presentation in the role of “The Mirror” was a fun surprise that has to be seen.  These details enhance the audience experience and are a testament to The Green Room’s commitment to youth theatre and their standard of excellence.

Snow White is a perfect introduction to theatre for children and gives kids the opportunity to see their peers featured on stage.  The production balances more somber moments with lighthearted comedy, while staying true to elements of the original tale.  A couple moments, like the revealing of the transformed Queen as the haggard woman, may be a little unsettling for a very young child.  But, overall, the production is suitable for all ages and is an excellent way for a younger audience to experience the excitement of live theatre.  The production lasts a little over an hour and includes an intermission.

Snow White is adapted and directed by John David Brown, III and is produced by People’s Bank & Drum & Willis-Reynolds.  There will be performances on April 12, 13, and 14, 2019.  On Friday and Saturday, performances will be at 7:30pm.  On Sunday, the performance will be at 3:00pm.  Tickets are available online at www.thegreenroomtheatre.org or at the Box Office (open Wednesdays – Fridays from 10:00am to 5:30pm).
