Hickory Businesses Do Good with Gold Daisy 4 Good

"We believe that the opposite of poverty is not wealth, but connectedness..."

By Iris Hartness, Publisher of Hickory-W Piedmont Macaroni Kid May 9, 2019

Each year, thousands of readers submit nominations and votes for their favorite family-friendly, local businesses through Hickory-W Piedmont Macaroni Kid’s Gold Daisy Awards.  This year, Gold Daisy Award winners were honored with their perspective titles and were invited to share their honor by participating in the “Gold Daisy 4 Good” Campaign.

For each business that took to social media to highlight their award and included the hashtag #GoldDaisy4Good, Hickory-W Piedmont Macaroni Kid would make a donation to the Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry’s NETworX Catawba initiative in their honor.  Because of the participation of the following businesses, Hickory-W Piedmont Macaroni Kid was able to raise awareness for NETworX and a gift of financial support for the initiative:

NETworX Catawba is lead by Director Liz Goebelbecker.  “We believe that the opposite of poverty is not wealth, but connectedness, dignity, value, and friendship,” shared Goebelbecker.  “We enter into intentional friendship with people we would never have known otherwise due to the invisible lines drawn in our world.  By coming together to share meals and learn and grow together, we tackle barriers for individuals and families that are keeping them from lives of abundance.  And, at the same time, we are also identifying barriers that may help our whole Hickory community!”

Participants in NETworX Catawba, identified as Champions (participants) and Allies (mentors), are taught holistically about overcoming poverty with an emphasis on community, relationships, trust and reciprocity.  During weekly meals and faith-based meetings, relationships are built, problems are identified and solutions are discovered.  The program also offers tutoring and mentoring for children.  To learn more about NETworX Catawba, please visit the GHCCM NETworX Website.

Hickory-W Piedmont Macaroni Kid would like to thank all of the readers and businesses that participated in 2019’s Gold Daisy Awards and Gold Daisy 4 Good campaign.  In the words of minister Thomas Brooks, "the best way to do ourselves good is to be doing good to others."
