Come Out to Murray's Mill Annual Free Ice Cream Social

July 11, 2019

Grab something sweet, bring a friend for us to meet, and watch the fastest rubber duck move its feet -- we’re off to the races at the Murray’s Mill Annual Ice Cream Social on July 14, 2019.

For over a decade, the Historical Association of Catawba County (HACC) has hosted this outreach event that features a rubber duck race and free ice cream, in the hope of raising funds for and awareness about maintaining the 1913 mill and historic district (1880-1953).  Every dollar received will benefit physical repairs of the Mill building.

After the duck race and ice cream, members of the public are encouraged to explore the natural surroundings of Murray’s Mill, shop for local goods in the General Store, or play historic games like lawn bowling and hoop rolling in the upper field. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch and take part in the milling process.

Sponsors include: Udderly Delicious Ice Cream and Shady Oaks Farm.

The Annual Ice Cream Social is Sunday, July 14, 2019 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Murray’s Mill in Catawba with the duck race beginning at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free and includes a bowl of ice cream (while supplies last). The rubber ducky race entry fee is $5; ducks provided. Participants will be invited to choose their own winning duck!

About Murray's Mill: The Murray's Mill historic district includes the 1913 mill itself, the 1890s Murray & Minges General Store, the 1880s Wheathouse, used as an exhibit gallery, the 1913 John Murray House, furnished to the period, and numerous outbuildings. Run by three generations of the Murray Family, who abandoned operations in 1967, the picturesque structures and surrounding land form the last milling complex in the county, meticulously preserved and interpreted by the Catawba County Historical Association since 1980.
