The weather understood this assignment this year, y’all

We are days away from “official” fall in North Carolina, and that means it’s time for one of the best shows nature has to offer: The leaves!! 🍁

Around here, we’re spoiled with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows that turn our mountains into the perfect fall backdrop.

And if you’re anything like me, you love getting outside this time of year to soak in all of the beautiful changes fall brings!

Lucky for us,  we don’t have to go far to find some seriously stunning spots to see those fall colors in action. Take a day trip to see some of the best semi-local spots to check out the fall colors around Hickory, North Carolina!

1. Grandfather Mountain [ Best Time to View: October 1 - 9 ]

I have to start this list off strong by sharing my absolutely favorite spot for fall leaf peeping, Grandfather Mountain. This mountain is so special to me, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can head straight to the top to get the best view of fall in all of its glory!

At 5,946 feet, this is one of the highest peaks in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the views alone from the Mile High Swinging Bridge will take your breath away – nevermind the fact that you’re walking across a swinging bridge.

Plan to make a full day of it! Pack a picnic and plan to purchase the audio tour - Trust me, it’s worth the extra cash, especially if you’ve never been up the mountain before. There’s also many overlooks, places to stop and explore, and so much more on the way to the top!

Don’t forget to stop in the Visitor’s Center to check out the museum, grab some ice cream, and walk through the animal exhibits! This will be a day to remember!

You can access Grandfather Mountain via U.S. 221, just a little north of Linville.

2. Julian Price Park [ Best Time to View: October 16 - 23 ]

Ah, Price Park—this spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a classic!

Pack a picnic, a couple of yard games, and plan to stay the whole day! The creek is the perfect place to hang out, watch the tiny fish, and enjoy the day.

And if you’re cruising around Milepost 296.7, make sure to pull over and check out the lake too. You’ll find beautiful reflections of fall colors dancing off the water, and the backdrop of Grandfather Mountain just seals the deal.

There’s also an easy 2.7-mile trail around the lake, so it’s perfect for a leisurely stroll to soak in all those fall vibes.

3. Graveyard Fields [ Best Time to View: October 1 - 9 ]

Graveyard Fields at Milepost 418.8 always turns earlier than most of the mountains, thanks to its high elevation.

You can take in the view from the overlook or hike around the valley, which has creeks, waterfalls, and plenty of trails to explore. It’s a great spot for families, and the fall colors here are out of this world.
