A Hidden Gem for Birthday Parties: Our Experience at Stars and Strides Therapeutic Riding Program
If you’re looking for a truly magical, memory-making birthday party experience in the Hickory area, I may have just found your spot. We recently celebrated my daughter’s sixth birthday at Stars & Strides Therapeutic Riding Program—and I can honestly say it was one of the most special, stress-free parties we’ve ever hosted.
From the moment we arrived, everything felt thoughtful and welcoming. This is a family-owned farm, and you can feel that personal touch in every detail. The family members were there the entire time, guiding activities, helping the kids, and making sure everything ran smoothly. They were warm, attentive, and genuinely invested in making the day special—not just for my daughter, but for every child who attended.
What Made It So Special
The activities were a dream for young kids:
- Pony rides (with the sweetest, most patient ponies!)
- “Paint a Pony” — yes, the kids got to hand-paint the ponies with washable paint
- Face painting
- Arts and crafts
- A petting zoo with a variety of friendly farm animals - the kids even got to hold them!
And the ponies? They stole the show. They were dressed up with unicorn horns (you can also choose fun themes like dinosaurs!), which added an extra layer of magic that had all the kids completely enchanted.
A Calm, Enjoyable Atmosphere
One thing that really stood out to me personally: I tend to get overstimulated at a lot of birthday parties, but this one felt completely different. The space was calm, open, and thoughtfully laid out—there was just enough room for the kids to roam freely and explore, without it ever feeling chaotic or overwhelming. I never felt like I had to chase after my children or constantly wonder where they were.
Even more telling, I could see that both kids and parents were genuinely enjoying themselves. It didn’t have that rushed, overstimulated feeling that so many parties can have—where parents are just getting through it for their kids. This felt relaxed, connected, and actually enjoyable for everyone there.
Easy, Stress-Free Setup
One of the biggest wins as a parent: they made hosting incredibly easy.

- We were able to bring our own food
- They handled setup and cleanup
It allowed us to actually enjoy the party instead of managing it—which, if you’ve ever hosted a kid’s birthday, you know is everything.

Located just outside Hickory in Maiden, the farm is easy to get to with plenty of parking. As an added bonus, there’s a local mom-and-pop pizza spot just five minutes away that delivered directly to us—making food one less thing to think about.

What truly sets this place apart is the heart behind it. This isn’t just a venue—it’s a family-run program rooted in care, connection, and creating meaningful experiences for kids. My daughter felt incredibly special, and I heard from multiple parents about how much their children loved it.
