Make Bird Feeders for National Bird Feeding Month

By Christel M. Hoydic, Middletown CT Publisher February 19, 2015
February is National Bird Feeding Month in the United States. Established in 1944, this celebratory month was created to educate the public on the hobby of wild bird feeding and watching and to encourage individuals to provide food, water, and shelter to help wild birds survive. The month is an ideal time to enjoy the bird feeding hobby, which is home-based and nature-oriented.

Over 55 million Americans over the age of 16 feed birds around their home, making bird-feeding the second most popular hobby in the United States behind gardening. It’s an entertaining, educational and inexpensive pastime that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Why not join in on the fun and give the birds a reason to visit your backyard?

Kids of all ages will enjoy creating their own bird feeders in the shapes of their choice. The best part is you probably have the two materials needed at home already: Cheerios and chenille stems.

The process is easy!  Simply pour a bowl of Cheerios and start stringing them on your chenille stems. Shape them into circles, hearts and squares or string them together by twisting the ends. Hang them on a tree branch outside your window and watch for birds to fly in to enjoy their snack!
